Review: Soundcore Boom 2
The successor to the Soundcore Motion Boom is here and ready to make a splash in the speaker market. Since I have never owned the original Motion Boom speaker, my thoughts on the Boom 2 will be solely on just this speaker and overall sound with no comparison.
Unboxing is pretty straight forward with just a USB-C to USB-C cable for charging and the speaker itself, which I received the black color but it’s also available in green and blue. Coming in at just under 4 pounds, this speaker is very lightweight and extremely portable with its top handle making it the best option to take out during the Spring/Summer. The Boom 2 is also fully waterproof and floatable meaning getting caught in the rain or having this speaker accidentally fall into a pool is no problem with its IPX7 rating. On the back your given the USB-C port for charging and a USB port for charging other devices as you can use the Boom 2 as a portable speaker; sadly there is no 3.5mm aux port for wired connections.
All of your button controls are right on the front of the speaker just under the handle grip and are straightforward with your power, Bluetooth pairing, volume, playback, Party Cast 2.0 and BassUp option. The Party Cast 2.0 feature on the Boom 2 allows you to pair this speaker with either another Boom 2 or any other speaker in the Soundcore lineup to create a multi room system or surround sound Left and Right speakers. The Bass Up option is what sends the speaker from 60W to a booming, no pun intended, 80W sound which makes this perfect for bottom heavy music genres.
Sound is super subjective and I truly believe if you ever have the chance to try the speaker beforehand you’ll see if it suits your music needs. Now for myself, I love bass. My choice of music genre is Hip Hop, EDM, Reggae and Reggaeton which usually relies on some good mid to low bass as vocals and highs don’t really play a part in the listening. While you do have options to tweak the sound to your liking via the Soundcore app, I feel the Signature Sound preset does a good job out of the box for my listening experience. Soundcore claims 24 hours of battery life with the Boom 2 on 50% volume and BassUp turned off. 50% volume is actually quite loud when using this in a controlled environment and I never saw myself going over 30-40% at home with a few people for a gathering. I had BassUp turned on and still had enough battery to continue on other days so I truly believe battery won’t be a problem if you tend to take this camping overnight. You can also save battery by turning off the party lights from the sides of the speakers which I did from the start.
Overall, the Boom 2 is quite possibly one of the best I’ve used in terms of sound, features and price coming in at just $129.99 and knowing Soundcore this item might go on sale sometime soon because they just love to run sales. With Spring and Summer coming up here in the East Coast this is the perfect speaker to pick up and if you live in warmer areas, just purchase this now; you won’t regret it.
